Its been quite a few years since the government has enacted the do-not-call list for telemarketers. Millions of people have placed their phone numbers on this list which keeps telemarketers from caling you without your permission. If you are one of a small group who hasn't placed your number on this list, this article will show you how.

Go to the Do Not Call Registry Website

Telemarketers will somehow find your phone number and continue to harass you unless you make use of the Do Not Call Registry. Signing up is an easy process. Go to the website: https://www.donotcall.gov/ then click register now, it then asks you a few simple questions including the phone numbers you want to enter into the list and your email address, then just click submit. Using this method you can register up to three numbers at once. That's it.

Once you've signed up, it takes approximately 31 days for your number to get distributed to telemarketers and to have them take your phone number off their calling list. Your phone number will remain on the list for as long as you own the number. Once you disconnect the number, you will have to re-register a new one.

Your Name is on the List But You're Still Getting Telemarketer Calls

Inevitably, there will be unscrupulous telemarketers who choose to ignore the do not call list and will still call you. There are a few things that you can do to get them to stop. The first is file a complaint with the government at the same website as the do not call list. This asks you for the date, name of company, and phone number that called you, then click submit. Another simple task. This places the callers into a database (though you cannot search through it) for the government.

Another step you can take is ask the telemarketer to stop calling you. To do this, you get the following information: name of person who called, company name, date/time of call, phone number, and then ask them to take your phone number off of their list. Also mentioin that you are on the do-not-call registry and they should not be calling. If they call again, you can actually file a lawsuit in small claims court against them.

Look Up Who is Calling You

The unfortunate thing is that you cannot look up phone numbers on the government's do-not-call registry website -- you can only file a complaint. If you are getting unwanted calls, you should also look them up to find out who is calling you, and share the caller information publicly with people. This is a great way to help stop these unwanted telemarketers. The best way to find out who they are is use a reverse phone directory to find out who they are.

There are a few easy things that you can do that will save you much annoyance and trouble in an ongoing basis. Nobody likes getting telemarketer calls. Ensure all of your phone numbers are registered on the do not call list, and if you are still getting calls, make sure to file a complaint and also look them up.
